PHYSICAL SELF-SERVICE · EXPLAINED

The site may be unstaffed.
The work still matters.

What can you rent out, what handover can you remove, and what does the site still need? Practical case studies and guides to the costs, software, access hardware and daily work behind physical self-service.

Self-service rentals, bookable spaces and the technology that makes them work.

WHAT COUNTS HERE

A customer can complete the routine visit without on-site staff.

A kayak collected from a rack. A sauna booked for an hour. A tool picked up without waiting at a counter. We cover businesses where customers can book or choose, pay and get access themselves. Someone still has to clean, maintain, restock and answer the phone when things go wrong.

THE SIMPLE TESTChoose or bookPayEnter, collect or dispense

Not covered for now: self-storage, parcel networks such as Amazon Locker and InPost, unattended fuel and automated warehouses. Those are substantial industries in their own right. A locker that rents out equipment is different—and belongs here. Software-only businesses are outside our focus too.

WHY I BUILT UNSTAFFED WORKS

Sixteen years around smart technology and real deployments.

I’m Rafael Frankow. I have spent 16 years working with connected products, channel partners and real deployments across Europe. I’m fascinated by what makes physical self-service work—not only the smart technology, but the customer journey and the operating decisions around it.

I built Unstaffed Works because I could not find one place that brought together the software, integrations, access hardware, operating models and real deployments. The information exists, but it is scattered across supplier websites and individual operator stories. This publication is my attempt to make it easier to understand and more useful before someone invests.

My starting point is practical: what happens when the guest arrives, what happens when something fails, and who does the work afterwards? I look at connectivity, physical fit, maintenance and cost per booking—not just whether a device can unlock.

How we research, assess and correct our coverage →

If you are planning a physical self-service business and still feel overwhelmed, please get in touch. No project is too small or too ambitious for an initial conversation. I can support the work through my consultancy or help you identify the right questions, specialists and technology options.

I’m always pleased to hear about an interesting deployment, software platform or hardware product. Operators and suppliers can share a use case; prospective founders can start with a simple conversation.
