ACCESSIBILITY · PUBLIC-SOURCE CASE
A self-service beach wheelchair station designed as public infrastructure
Playa-Rent’s BeachWheel changes the commercial logic: the municipality funds the station so the person using the all-terrain wheelchair can access it free of charge.

Beach access without a collection desk
French municipal beach-access model. Current municipality and station totals are not confirmed in this profile.
Independent access to beach-mobility equipment can reduce reliance on a staffed collection desk and its opening hours.
The model is access, not only rental
The station lends all-terrain and floating wheelchairs intended for beaches, paths and water access. Playa-Rent describes municipalities and local authorities as the buyers, while use is free to the public and available without an app or advance reservation.
How collection works
The published journey asks the user to scan a QR code, place a payment-card pre-authorisation, unlock the station and later return and secure the wheelchair. That is a useful example of a deposit-style control layer supporting a free public service.
The work behind inclusion
Accessibility changes the exception design. A finished report should examine physical reach, companion support, cleaning after sand and salt water, safety information, emergency contact and how local staff inspect the wheelchair between uses.
Making it work on site
The station is only one part of an accessible route. Surface, approach width, transfer space, signage and equipment maintenance need assessment alongside the access system.
The supplier describes QR-led access and a card preauthorisation without an app. Test accessibility of the whole booking and collection process; do not assume every user can scan or transfer without help.
Costs, upkeep and the takeaway
This is a municipality-funded, free-to-use service with a card guarantee, not a normal paid-per-hire business. Evaluate availability, cost per use and staffing needs rather than inventing rental profit.
The outcome to measure is usable beach access, not simply successful unlocks.
