CAMPER RENTAL · PARTNER-SOURCE REVIEW
Removing the two-person diary problem from camper key handover
CheekyCampers used a retrofit keybox workflow to let customers collect vehicle keys without synchronising every arrival with a staff member.

Separating key collection from camper preparation
Switzerland. Ten vehicles were reported in the 2022 supplier story; this is not a current fleet count.
A keybox removes the need to synchronise the customer’s arrival with the founder. It does not replace vehicle preparation or a useful camper induction.
A deliberately simple first deployment
The founders used a keybox as a minimum viable access layer rather than redesigning the vehicles. Customers receive a PIN, open the box attached to the camper and collect the physical vehicle key.
What the historical source reports
The 2022 supplier story described a ten-vehicle fleet, estimated roughly two hours saved per customer and said the hardware investment was recovered within a year. Those are useful hypotheses but require a current operator check.
The rest of the handover still matters
Removing the key exchange does not remove licence verification, deposits, condition photos, driving instructions, cleaning, damage assessment or emergency support. Those processes decide whether remote collection actually improves the rental.
Making it work on site
A retrofit box reuses the vehicle key. Check attachment security, key fit and parking access instead of assuming the vehicle itself needs electronic modification.
Send key collection and vehicle instructions in advance. Separate a quick key pickup from licence checks, condition records and knowing how the camper’s equipment works.
Costs, upkeep and the takeaway
The historical two-hour saving and sub-year payback are supplier-published claims. Ask whether they include travel and both ends of the hire, and whether saved owner time actually reduced spending.
Start with the smallest useful automation, then improve the rest of the handover.
