BOOKABLE SPACES

Starting a private dog field: booking, gate access and the work between visits

The business sells exclusive use of a secure space. Design the site, timetable, access and maintenance around that promise.

A dog field can let customers arrive without a receptionist, but its value depends on a genuinely private, secure visit. A calendar and a smart padlock cannot fix an unsafe fence, overlapping customers or a waterlogged entrance.

Resolve the site before the software

Investigate access, parking, drainage, fencing, neighbouring uses and local demand. Obtain site-specific advice on permissions and insurance before committing to works. This is an operating checklist, not a planning determination.

In England, government guidance explains that a material change of use of land or buildings requires planning permission. Whether a particular proposal constitutes one needs local assessment. Do not apply England’s rules automatically to another UK nation or country.

Make the timeslot a usable private visit

Define arrival, departure and the buffer between parties. The parking and gate arrangement should not force unfamiliar dogs to meet during turnover.

Put the same times and rules in checkout, confirmation and signage. A time-window credential can govern entry, but it does not remove an overstaying customer.

Select software for field-specific administration

Recurring reservations, buffers, cancellations, dog details and automatic messages are more useful than a generic calendar feature list. Paddli advertises hosted and embedded booking routes; Muddy Booking promotes dedicated field booking and an igloo integration.

Demonstrate adjacent bookings, a cancellation and a changed code. A daily rotating code is not the same as an individual booking-window PIN. Confirm what the selected integration actually issues.

Choose the simplest suitable gate system

A suitable battery padlock can avoid an electrical installation at a simple gate. An electric gate or magnetic lock introduces power, a controller, enclosure and safe-exit requirements. Treat that as a site project.

Check reach, visibility and operation while handling dogs in rain. PIN entry can avoid an app at the gate; booking and receiving the PIN still need a connection.

Cost inspection and customer recovery

Plan fence and gate checks, waste collection, surface care, seasonal repairs and response to a customer who cannot enter. Do not describe the income as passive.

Calculate contribution per usable slot after payment and booking fees, then deduct site costs. Hours outside permitted or practical operating conditions are not sellable capacity.

The gate code supports the promise of a private visit; the site and timetable must deliver it.
